1Pet 5:1-10 (6-7)

Welcome

Today is a day that the Lord made, not because we deserve it but because God has given someone somewhere another day to get it right before it is too late. It might be me it might be you but God has given us another day to get it right and draw closer to him.

Today we will look at one of my favorite writers of the bible, Peter.  We want to look at what Peter and a few other writers have to say about casting our cares, problems, worriers, our good days and bad days our trials and tribulations upon God.

Before we look at any part of this letter lets first look at verse 7 (read)

Casting in the dictionary says that it is a action of throwing, fling, to hurl, to throw off, to get rid of.

In the Greek casting = ep-ir-hrip’-to with means to throw upon or cast upon.

Peter says to cast all your care upon him. To many times our idea of casting is a little off. To many times when we think of casting we think of fishing. In fishing you cast the line out but you reel it back in, and that is the wrong answer when it comes to casting our cares upon God.

Ps 55:22 Ps 37:1-5 No where do I see anything about giving our problems to God and then taking them back.

Rom 8:26-28,  Ps 27:10

Not one us can not cast his cares upon God and leave them there until he first does what Peter says to do in verse 6 (read).

Could Daniel have faced the lions den if he had not first humbled himself to God? Moses had to humble himself to God before he could cast his cares upon God and do Gods will. Peter had to learn that life was more then what the eye could see before he could humble himself to God and Cast his cares upon him. We have to do the same today.

Let’s go back to where Peter is talking to the elders. (1pet 1:1-4)

Feed the flock of God. Elders can not do this if they have not humbled themselves to God and learned to cast all the cares onto him. An elder can’t do any of the things in verses 2-3 if he has not learned to cast his cares. Peter has said that he has to be an example to the flock.

An elder that is not humble or learned to cast and not reel back his cares can’t be the example that the church needs to grow stronger in the Lord. I thank God for the opportunity to work with the elders here.

Who better to talk about feeding the flock then Peter. For it was Jesus himself that told Peter to feed the flock. Jn21:15-17

Peter says when you feed the folk, with a ready mind and are the example the flock needs you will receive your crown of glory when Jesus comes back. (verse4)

Verse 5 Peter starts to talk to the younger crowd.

Verse 6 God gives grace to the humble (verse7) so humble yourself to him.

Verse 8 Peter fell into the trap of the devil all because he was not spiritually (sober) and he was not whole heartily following Jesus (vigilant). Rookies that listen to the pros are the ones that make an impact on the game. By this time Peter had become a pro at the tricks of the devil and we should be listening to him.

Verse 9 Eph 6:10-13 How do you think David stood against Goliath? His faith was not in his slingshot not in the rocks he picked up but in God.

Verse 10 Peter says the God of all grace. Peter knew all about Gods grace when the angel told Mary to tell the disciples and Peter to meet him in Galilee (Mk16:7). Look at what the God of all grace will do for you. (10b read) after you have suffered for awhile God will make you perfect, establish you, strengthen and settle you.

Have you forgotten how to cast or maybe never learned. Do you have a problem with your casting? Do you real your problems back in after giving them to God?

I can’t think of a better time then right now to ask God for his help.

You come to God by Hearing – Believing – Repenting – Confessing – Being Baptized and then doing your best to live a faithful life for God.
