Hebrews 12:1-4
We have just finished a good study in Hebrews 11. And we spent some time looking at the people of the Old Testament and the type of faith that they had. I hope that it has in some way helped all of us grow stronger and closer to God.
We want to close our look in the faith issue by looking at Hebrews 12: 1-4.
Verse 1a) Wherefore seeing. You first have to be able to see what these people of old did and how their faith is what carried them through. Not themselves but faith in God brought them through. All of us have some one in our lives that has had a positive effect on us. The writer is saying that the lives that these people lived should have a positive effect on us and cause us to put our faith in God.
When the devil comes at you, you have heaven watching you and cheering for you. When the devil gets a good right hook in on you, heaven is saying get up, put your faith in God stand up to the devil. Don’t let the devil win.
Verse1b) Let us lay aside every weight (1Pet 2:1, Col3:8-9) This weight is the evil things that can have control over our mind. Notice that the writer said every weight. Why is it important to get rid of these weights?
Verse1c) and the sin which do so easily beset us. (Mk7:20-23) He have to get rid of the weights that are in us so that they don’t come out of us and cause us to sin and fall short of Gods glory. All of this happens because of our lack of faith and believeth in God.
Verse1d) run the race (1Cor
The race that is set before us. This tells me that there is a certain course that is set out before us to run this race and to be successful in the race we have to stay on course. Matt 7:13-14
Verse 2a) Looking to Jesus. I have seen this to be a problem with a lot of people. We to often want to judge what is right or wrong by what some one is doing and not on what Jesus said an did.
Author = the Originator. Founder, Leader and this is what Jesus is
Finisher = One who brings something through to the goal so as to win. A Completer.
Acts
Jesus ran his race here on earth. He showed himself to those that had been following him but let me show you this really quick.
Lk 24: 1-12 (12) There is a lot that goes with this but I just want to touch on it for a moment. In that time if some one was finished at the table they would take their napkin and throw it on the table so that the servants could see that they were done and not coming back. If they were not done they would fold their napkin and lay it on the table to show the servants that they were not done and that they would be coming back.
Jesus did finish the course of faith but he will be coming back one day to claim his followers.
Verse 2b) Who for the joy. Lk 24:13-35 (25-27)
Jesus physical side looked at the pain of the cross but his spiritual side saw the joy.
Raising children is not easy and some times it can be down right painful. But when they bring home that A+ on a spelling test that they have been working hard at you forget all about the pain and see the joy.
Verse 2c) 1Pet
Verse 3) The writer here again says look to Jesus. If we stay focused on Jesus the lesser chance the devil has at tripping us up and getting into our lives and making a mess of it. Jesus said many times (if they hate me they will hate you). This is way it is important to stay focused on Jesus, because the devil can make you think your right when really you are not because your vision of Jesus has lost its focus.
Verse 4) For some reason I had never seen verse four like this as I see it now. Jesus was lead from judgment hall to judgment hall, wiped, beat, spit upon, friends left him, made fun of, made to carry the cross that he would be nailed to, carried the sins of everybody, nailed to the cross, made fun of again, a sign placed upon his cross king of the Jews, Given vinegar to drink, died on this cross, not for himself but for the world, stabbed in the side to make sure he was dead. All this to finish his race here on earth, and to give us something to look toward as we run this race that is set before us.
When I read verse four the first thing I did was say thank you. Then I thought to my self we just don’t have it that bad. Yes I might lose a friend or two along the way. I might be made fun of, and I have had some sin in my life to deal with, and even help a few people with theirs. But nothing we go through will ever compare to what Jesus went through.
The Hebrew writer is saying. Look none of you had to go through what Jesus went through. Yet he still went through it and he did it for us and not himself. As we look to the author and finisher of our faith lets also look to Jesus as an example of true endurance.
