Luke 6:46-49

Welcome to the first Sunday of 2007

Theme for last year “A Year of preparation”

Theme for this year “A Year of Building on the Rock”

The one thing that Jesus wants all to see is that when it comes down to serving God there is only two foundations. There is Gods foundation and the world’s foundation.

There’s a program on TV called “stunt junkies” and one of the episodes there is this guy trying to jump his snowmobile and do a flip at the same time. Every time he tried he failed. The reporter said you almost made it. The rider said almost doesn’t count.

Almost serving God will not get you to heaven.

Mark 10:17 -22 The rich man here almost served God all the way.

Luke 6:46-47 Jesus is saying there are two kinds of people listen, an I’ll tell you of them.

Luke 6:48-49

Both of these individuals build a house and just by looking at them a person might think they were both sound houses.

I like watching car shows on TV. I was watching where there was a contest on who could build the best looking roadster. One of the teams was running short of time and they put their motor together with no parts on the inside. They had to push it on the trailer from the trailer to the show floor hoping to get there before the judges and they did and won. The judges never asked any one to start there cars they just went on looks.

Jesus will ask and require you to start your car.

Jam 2:14-16

Have you ever looked at something from a distance and said WOW, but when you got up close you said UGLY.

Both of these builders build a house, but one of them took the time to make sure it was on a solid foundation. Notice that it was not the foundation that kept the house from being torn apart but it was what the foundation was founded on.

Lets go to 1Cor 10:1-13 to close.

Verses 1,2 They had a choice follow Moses to the other side or be killed by the enemy. We have the same choice today. Follow Jesus to the other side or be killed by the enemy.

Ver 3, Ex 16:11 -16 Neh 9:15

Ver 4, Ex 17:1-7 Jesus wasn’t actually the rock here but it was a sign to the people that God was there and did care for them. Jesus is a sign for us that God is here and he does care for us.

Ver 5, Numbers 14 & 26 I’m just sure that I could have done what Moses done. He put up with a lot of complaining.

Ver 6,  Ps 106 Please read it sometime.

Ver 7, The golden calf Ex 32.

Ver 8, Moabite women Ex Num 25.

Ver 9, Num 21.

Ver 10, Num 14, 16

Ver 11-13  These verses are a sermon on their own. All the bad things that have been recorded in the bible are there for our learning. Not to learn how to do but to learn how not to do. When the devil shots one of his fiery arrows at you do think that you are by your self and that it has never happened to any one else because it has. The devil might have a few new twists but they are the same old tricks. Gods plan of salvation is still the same.
