Numb.27:15-23

23 Then he laid his hands on him (Joshua) and commissioned him, as the LORD instructed through Moses.

(see Deut.34:9 for results of laying on of hands)

The time that scripture speaks of the custom or practice of laying on of hands in Gen.48:8-20 (14) where Israel blessed them and much more – spoke of what their future would be.

When Moses laid hands on Joshua he commissioned and imparted something more – a part of his spirit from the Lord. From this we see a rich, deep heritage imbedded in history for our understanding. Even on into Christianity the process of laying on of hands has been a constant part of Biblical Church practice.

HEB 6:1 Therefore let us leave the elementary teachings about Christ and go on to maturity, not laying again the foundation of repentance from acts that lead to death, n and of faith in God, 2 instruction about baptisms, the laying on of hands, the resurrection of the dead, and eternal judgment. 3 And God permitting, we will do so.

From this passage we see that part of the basics of Christianity 101 clearly shows the 1st century Church did in fact have some practices involving laying on of hands. Often times this practice was coupled with prayer and at times fasting.

·        Acts 6:6 - the seven (1st deacons)

·        Acts 13:3 - Barnabas and Saul

·        Acts 14:23 - appointing elders

·        1Tim.4:14 - the council of elders

From these passages we gain insight into the ‘why’ we too desire to practice what was clearly foundational in the Churches of Christ of the 1st century.

We understand that there are greater things at work than just a ceremony; we perceive our Lord and God to be involved in the process of invocating His Holy name.
